Identical piece An individual mailpiece that has the same mail classification and physical aspect, size, and weight as all other pieces in a mailing.

Image In CD-ROM, the data assembled in the exact form wanted on the replicated CDs, i.e., completely premastered.

Indexing Creation of a data index to speed up search and retrieval.

Indicia Imprinted designation on mail that denotes postage payment (e.g., metered postage or permit imprint).

Information-based indicia (IBI) Digital indicia that include human-readable information and a USPSapproved two-dimensional barcode with a digital signature and other required fields.

Injection Molding A process for replication of CDs wherein molten plastic is injected into the cavity of a mold under pressure, cooled and removed as a solid clear plastic disc. The data information is transferred to the plastic in this process from the “stamper”.

Inlay Card Paper graphic seen through the back of the jewel case. Also referred to as Tray card.

Insert A letter, card, or similar item placed inside another mailpiece (host piece).

Insured mail A service that provides indemnity coverage for a lost, rifled, or damaged article, subject to the standards for the service and payment of the applicable fee. Insurance is available for merchandise sent as First- Class Mail, Priority Mail, Standard Mail, and Package Services. International Mail Manual (IMM) The USPS manual that contains classification regulations and other requirements for mailing between the United States and other countries.

Interim Proof Electronic or hard copy working proof sent to a client

International Standard Book Number (ISBN) A publication number issued by the Library of Congress that identifies a specific book or other nonperiodical.

International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) A publication number issued by the Library of Congress that identifies a specific periodical (such as a Periodicals publication).

Inverse telecine Process of reversing the 3:2 pulldown used to transfer the 24fps of film to the 30 fps of video. In MPEG video, this is an image quality improvement step in process of encoding.

Irregular parcels and pieces Parcels that do not meet the dimensional criteria of machinable parcels and other parcels that cannot be processed by parcel sorters (for example, a noncaseable flat, small cube or fragile parcel, paper or sleeve-wrapped catalog, or sackable roll, tube, or film).

ISO 9660 The international standard which describes the file structure for putting computer files on compact disc. The draft version of this standard is known as High Sierra.

ISO 9660 with Rockridge Extensions A revision to the ISO specification to allow for UNIX specific exceptions to the ISO 9660 standard.
