RAM Random access memory; memory for short-term (during manipulations only) data storage.

Random Access/Non Linear Editing Video editing systems capable of retrieving information instantly without the need for shuttling tape. Video and audio information is compressed and stored digitally on large capacity hard drives rather than on videotape.

Raster Art Raster Art describes the character or shape in terms of X-Y Grid Coordinates. There are a finite number of points on the grid. Bitmapped (.bmp) artwork is a raster image

Rates and classification service center (RCSC) A USPS field office that provides guidance to employees and customers on mail classification, postage rates, and mail preparation. See G042 for listing.

Red Book Standard see CDA. CD Audio. As the CD standards were set by Philips, Sony and others, they were published in a book with a red cover, which became known as the Red Book for audio.

Reflective Layer The silver metalized layer on top of the dye that reflects the laser beam back to the reading assembly.

Region Code Region Codes determine where you can watch your DVD. For example: if you purchase a DVD in Japan, you won’t be able to watch it in the USA.

Regional Management A mandatory feature of DVD-Video restricting the playback of a disc to a specific geographical area or region. Regional coding is optional; a disc without such coding will play in all regions (world total of 6).

Registered mail Provides the most secure service offered by the USPS. The sender receives a receipt at the time of mailing, and a delivery record is maintained by the USPS. This service also provides optional indemnity in case of loss or damage. Compare with certified mail and insured mail.

Replicaiton Process used to manufacture CDs, DVDs, and custom shaped CDs using injection moulding techniques.The preferred production method for large runs (as opposed to duplication, or multiple one-offs, known as multiples).

Residual shape surcharge A surcharge applied to some Standard Mail parcels. Standard Mail pieces subject to the residual shape surcharge may be eligible for a barcoded discount.

Resolution Chrominance and Luminance Resolution (detail) usually measured horizontally across the picture tube. This is the number of black and white lines that can be differentiated and expressed in lines. Usually given in pixel width and height and color depth.

Restricted delivery A supplemental mail service that generally limits who may receive an item. This service is available for a fee when used with certified mail, collect on delivery, insured mail, and registered mail.

Restricted matter Any item on which certain mailing restrictions have been imposed for legal reasons other than risk of harm to persons or property involved in moving the mail and that require specific endorsements and markings. Examples include intoxicating liquors, oddshaped items in envelopes, motor vehicle master keys, and locksmithing devices as well as odor-producing materials, certain liquids and powders, and batterypowered devices. Compare to hazardous material.

RGB Red, Green, and Blue the three “light primaries” used for video tube color. RGB files need to be converted to CMYK for printing.

RIP Raster Image Processor. A film vendor will “RIP” files to an imagesetter or platemaker. All necessary art is processed as one very high resolution piece of raster artwork for output from a high quality imaging device

ROM Read Only Memory. Computer memory which can only be read. New data cannot be entered and the existing data are non-volatile. This means they stay there even when power is turned off. A ROM is a memory device which is programmed at the factory and whose contents thereafter cannot be altered.

Rural route (RR) A delivery route served by a rural carrier.
