889290616616    Janis: Little Girl Blue – Special Director’s Edition    2015
889290598202    Janis: Little Girl Blue – Special Director’s Edition(BD)

Janis Joplin is one of the most revered and iconic of all rock & roll singers, a tragic and misunderstood figure who thrilled millions of listeners and blazed new creative trails before her death in 1970 at age 27. With “Janis: Little Girl Blue,” Oscar-nominated director Amy J. Berg (“Deliver Us from Evil,” “West of Memphis”) examines Joplin’s story in depth, presenting an intimate, insightful portrait of a complicated, driven, often beleaguered artist.   Joplin’s own words tell much of the film’s story through a series of letters she wrote home over the years, many made public here for the first time (and read by Southern-born indie rock star/actor Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power). Joplin was a powerhouse when she sang, and her recordings have never left the radio or the hearts of rock fans. Berg’s “Janis: Little Girl Blue” offers new understanding of a bright, complex woman whose meteoric rise and sudden demise changed music forever and continues to influence female musicians.    “”Janis: Little Girl Blue,”” written and directed by Amy J. Berg and produced by Academy Award-winner Alex Gibney (“Going Clear,” “Taxi to the Dark Side”), features exclusive interviews with musicians Pink, Kris Kristofferson, Melissa Etheridge, Bob Weir, Juliette Lewis, famed TV presenter Dick Cavett, counterculture filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker and the Joplin family.
This Special Director’s Edition DVD comes packed with over 30 minutes of bonus features, including extended interviews with family, friends, musicians that Janis inspired, musical performances by Kris Kristofferson and The Big Brother Guys and an exclusive look into the Walk of Fame Ceremony for Janis. English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired included.

When Esmeralda Marini (Cardinale) pays a surprise visit to NYC police captain Mike Harmon (Hudson), the uptight cop agrees to help her as a favor to her father, an old friend he hasn’t seen in years. She explains that she wants to break into an Austrian villa and return gems stolen by a friend, but Mike has no idea it’s all a con to rob the house herself. As the thrill of adventure loosens him up and he offers to become her partner, Mike must find a way to keep Esmeralda a crook when she decides to quit and go honest. The rarely seen reteaming of Hudson and Cardinale, who had starred together in Blindfold (1965), A Fine Pair was shot on location in Salzburg, Rome, the Tyrol, and New York, and features a bubbly, infectious score composed by Ennio Morricone.    Rock Hudson, Claudia Cardinale, Leon Askin, Walter Giller, Ellen Corby, Guido Alberti, Peter Dane

888574389567    Brotherly Love (1970) (MOD)    1970    Peter O’Toole and Susannah York star in this controversial tragicomedy about a brother’s obsessive love for his sister. Having left her husband, Douglas (Michael Craig), Hilary (York) moves in with her unbalanced brother, Pink (O’Toole), who uses wit and humor to hide his amorous yearnings. Agreeing to meet Douglas at a local dance, Hilary soon discovers to what lengths Pink will go to prevent a reconciliation. Directed by J. Lee Thompson, Brotherly Love was based on James Kennaway’s 1961 novel Household Ghosts, which the author would later adapt into a stage play (Country Dance, 1967) and screenplay before his untimely passing at age 40 in 1968.    Peter O’Toole, Susannah York, Michael Craig, Harry Andrews, Cyril Cusack, Judy Cornwell, Brian Blessed

888574389574    Melinda (1972) (MOD)    1972    Blaxploitation superstars Calvin Lockhart, Rosalind Cash, Vonetta McGee and Jim Kelly take on the mob in this super-charged, action-packed thriller. When Melinda Lewis (McGee) is found brutally murdered in his L.A. apartment, smooth-talking disk jockey Frankie J. Parker (Lockhart) turns sleuth to clear his name. Chased and attacked by junkies, dealers and thugs, Frankie soon learns Melinda is the ex-mistress of a Chicago mobster and has evidence the gangster wants back. Enlisting the aid of a jealous ex-flame (Cash) and a karate master from the hood (Kelly, in his screen debut), Frankie sets out to track down the mob boss who framed him and avenge Melinda’s death. A box-office success on its original release, Melinda was one of the few Blaxploitation films produced, written and directed by African-Americans and boasts a fantastic funk score by R&B legend Jerry Butler and Grammy® winner Jerry Peters.    Calvin Lockhart, Rosalind Cash, Vonetta McGee, Paul Stevens, Rockne Tarkington, Ross Hagen, Renny Roker, Judyann Elder, Jim Kelly, Jan Tice, Lonne Elder III

888574383084    The Centurions: Part Two (MOD)    1985    Three become five as two new Centurions-John Thunder and Rex Charger- join the fight against the malevolent Doc Terror and his mechanoid minions. It’s a much-needed boost too, as Crystal Kane and her original three Centurions Max Ray, Jack Rockwell and Ace McCloud- find their respective mastery of land, sea and air stretched to the limit as they face off against menaces monstrous, magical, mutant and mechanical. John Thunder’s covert infiltration skills and Rex Charger’s energy manipulation abilities are just the X-treme boost the Centurions need as Doc Terror allies himself with the alien cybernetic creatures Gog and Magog. And that’s just a warm-up to cyberpunk mysteries, reality vortexes and oceanic black holes! But whatever the challenge, they are ready- the Centurions!
888574388867    Medical Center: The Complete Sixth Season (MOD)    1973-74    Chad Everett and James Daly, as Chief of Surgery Joe Gannon and Chief of Staff Paul Lochner, return for another season of their groundbreaking medical drama. While the country around it seethed through a time of astonishing societal changes, Medical Center remained at the vanguard of science and drama. Among the season’s standouts is the Shirley Knight-starring episode, “The Tainted Lady,” which received a citation from the American Cancer Society for its treatment of the stigma then surrounding breast cancer and radical mastectomies. Other issues confronted include nymphomania, the intersection of faith and medicine, treatment of undocumented workers, resurgent white supremacy, the integration of the mentally challenged into society and the chemical castration of convicted sex offenders. All stories are brought to life thanks to stellar guest stars, such as Cyd Charisse, Jodie Foster and Rita Moreno. A 6-disc, 24-episode collection.    Chad Everett, James Daly, Chris Hutson, Barbara Baldavin, Martin E. Brooks, Audrey Totter

888574388911    Floradora Girl, The (1930) (MOD)    1930    Set decades before the brassy, bustling contemporary Busby Berkeley musicals to follow three years later, 1930’s period pre-code musical The Florodora Girl might also be called Gold Diggers of 1900. Sharpie showgirls of the Florodora Sextette cast their nets wide for rich husbands while advising (with plummy double-entendre aplomb) their beau-less chorus-mate Daisy Dell (radiant Marion Davies) in the finer points of man-trapping. Making a beach party splash, the naive beauty catches the eye of millionaire Jack Vibart (Lawrence Gray). Warned of his dishonorable intentions, Daisy tries to play the game of fascinating a rich man but rejects becoming a kept woman. But Jack keeps persisting, and Daisy stops resisting. Matrimonial bliss is another matter: Jack gambles away his fortune and his mother favors an arranged marriage to shore their finances. Will Daisy land her man and make a fine romance? Leave it to the two-strip Technicolor® “Tell Me, Pretty Maiden” finale for the lovebirds to claim center stage and bring The Florodora Girl home.    Marion Davies, Lawrence Gray, Walter Catlett, Louis John Bartels, Ilka Chase, Vivien Oakland, Jed Prouty, Claud Allister, Sam Hardy, Nance O’Neil, Robert Bolder, Jane Keithley, Maude Turner Gordon, George Chandler, Anita Louise, Mary Jane Irving

888574389628    Not So Dumb (1929) (MOD)    1929    Dulcy Parker is the most well-meaning, supportive fiancée a business up-and-comer could want, except that she’s a birdbrain who spews idiotic malapropisms when otherwise not saying and doing the wrong thing to the wrong person throughout the weekend dinner party she’s arranged to better her intended’s fortunes. She’s also reason to cheer, since the nimbly enchanting Marion Davies plays her to the hilarious hilt in this wacky screen adaptation of the George S. Kaufman/Marc Connelly Broadway hit Dulcy. Reteaming with King Vidor, who showcased her comedic gifts in the The Patsy and Show People, Davies dizzily goes to town in a “deft precursor to the screwball farces of the 1930s and ’40s” (Leonard Maltin’s Classic Movie Guide). Featuring future director Elliott Nugent as her increasingly exasperated beau, Franklin Pangborn as a swoony Hollywood scenarist and future ace screenwriter Donald Ogden Stewart (The Philadelphia Story) as a lecherous tycoon, Not So Dumb is 76 marvelous minutes of smart and screw-loose effervescence.    Marion Davies, Elliott Nugent, Raymond Hackett, Franklin Pangborn, Julia Faye, William Holden, Donald Ogden Stewart, Sally Starr, George Davis

888574389635    Peg o’ My Heart (1933) (MOD)    1933    Marion Davies was twice the age of the character she was playing, but never you mind. As a plucky Irish lass taken from village life in Erin to claim a £2-million inheritance if she lives three years with a snooty family of destitute British bluebloods, Davies is a lovely and winsome colleen in a vehicle popularized on stage and silent screen by legendary Laurette Taylor and expertly retailored for Davies. Breaking from the jaded, brassy broads she’d recently played (and of which her mentor/paramour William Randolph Hearst disapproved), Davies brings enormous charm and comically cuts through all potential blarney as the wide-eyed, plain-spoken Peg McConnell. She prevails over the snobs and parlor snakes who would underestimate, as one of the movie’s tunes proclaims, this “Sweetheart Darlin’.” Unabashedly sentimental, spiked with wit (courtesy of adaptor/two-time Academy Award® winner* Frances Marion), sprinkled with song and deftly directed by Robert Z. Leonard (The Great Ziegfeld, Pride and Prejudice), Peg o’ My Heart will win you over.    Marion Davies, Onslow Stevens, J. Farrell MacDonald, Juliette Compton, Irene Browne, Tyrell Davis, Alan Mowbray, Doris Lloyd

888574373887    Dr. Kildare: The Complete Fifth Season BTB (MOD)    1965-66    Dr. Kildare’s swansong fifth season carried with it some significant changes to the show’s format. No longer a once-weekly one hour drama, Dr. Kildare was now a twice-weekly half hour serial with storylines stretching over multiple parts and, perhaps even more excitingly, James Kildare M.D. (Richard Chamberlain) and Dr. Leonard Gillespie (Raymond Massey) were now being broadcast in color! This 7-Disc, 58-Episode Collection starts out on a high note as James Mason guests as a damaged doc whose psyche Kildare must battle to save. Then it’s time for Kildare take up his first teaching assignment, shortly before the hospital gets a new-state-of-the-art kidney machine. But which patients will be chosen? Notable guests include Dean Stockwell, Cloris Leachman, Fred Astaire, Audrey Totter, Kim Hunter, Darren McGavin, Basil Rathbone, James Earl Jones, Ricardo Montalban, Martin Balsam, William Shatner, John Saxon, and George Kennedy.    Richard Chamberlain, Raymond Massey, Ken Berry

888574389642    RKO Varieties Triple Feature (MOD)    TBD    In these three anthology films, RKO Pictures plumbed their library of musical and comedy shorts to cull together a series of celluloid variety shows that are toe-tapping and rib-tickling. Comedian Gil Lamb hosts Make Mine Laughs and delivers up musical and comedic delights from the likes of Leon Errol, Frances Langford, Anne Shirley & Dennis Day and more. Newcomer Jack Paar emcees both Variety Time and 1951’s Footlight Varieties, bridging the pop-culture gap from movies to radio to television. Variety Time enjoys contributions from Edgar Kennedy, Frankie Carle, Pat Rooney, Harold & Lola and more. Footlight Varieties in turn serves up a selection that includes The Sportsmen, Liberace, Jerry Murad’s Harmonicats and Red Buttons.
888574389703    Woman In White, The (1948) (MOD)    1948    As painter Walter Hartright (Gig Young) walks through the wooded dark night to Limmeridge House, she arrives like a heavenly apparition: The Woman in White, the title character of Wilkie Collins’ pioneering 1859 mystery novel, well-embodied in this eerily effective, lushly atmospheric screen adaptation by lovely Eleanor Parker. She is the key figure (actually figures, playing dual roles) in a tale of murder, insanity, switched identities and dastardly plots encircling an inheritance, while Hartright and family cousin Marian (Alexis Smith) sleuth out the motivations of the estate’s odd, sinister characters. Director Peter Godfrey (Christmas in Connecticut, The Two Mrs. Carrolls) marshals studio forces of top-tier production and costume design, a lyrical Max Steiner score and a rogues’ gallery of juicy turns by John Abbott as the hypochondriac family scion, John Emery as a scheming nobleman, Agnes Moorehead as a long-suffering wife and, supremely, Sydney Greenstreet as evil bon vivant Count Fosco, to craft a silkily stylish and hugely gripping thriller.    Agnes Moorehead, Alexis Smith, Sydney Greenstreet, Gig Young, Eleanor Parker, John Abbott, John Emery, Curt Bois, Emma Dunn, Matthew Boulton, Anita Sharp-Bolster, Clifford Brooke, Barry Bernard

888574394059    Lizzie (1957) (MOD)    1957    In 1957, two starkly dramatic movies about a mentally troubled woman with three distinct personalities vied for attention. The second of these elevated Joanne Woodward to stardom and won her a Best Actress Oscar® for The Three Faces of Eve. But the first, arriving months earlier and boasting a juicy role for three-time Academy Award® nominee Eleanor Parker, is equally worthy. In Lizzie, from Shirley Jackson’s novel The Bird’s Nest, Parker is first seen as frail, sad Elizabeth, beset by headaches as well as menacing letters from Lizzie, who emerges from within as a barfly mantrap compensating for Elizabeth’s shyness. Director Hugo Haas plays a caring neighbor who steers her to the psychiatrist (Richard Boone) who unlocks her disordered mind, bringing out another steadier woman named Beth. Lounge singer Johnny Mathis croons “Warm and Tender” and “It’s Not for Me to Say” as wildcat Lizzie carouses, while Joan Blondell as an alcoholic aunt is the skeptical keeper of dark family secrets at the heart of the intelligent and gripping Lizzie.    Eleanor Parker, Richard Boone, Joan Blondell, Hugo Haas, Ric Roman, Dorothy Arnold, John Reach, Marion Ross, Johnny Mathis

888574086497    Terra-Cotta Warrior, A (MOD)    1990    Following their collaborations on the international art house hits Red Sorghum and Ju Dou, director Zhang Yimou and actress Gong Li reteamed for this bigbudget fantasy. Stepping in front of the camera this time, Zhang stars as a Qin Dynasty chamberlain who makes the mistake of falling for one of the emperor’s concubines. As punishment, he is transformed into a Terracotta Warrior and awakens 3,000 years later, where he encounters an actress who is a dead ringer for the woman who captivated him so many years ago. Written by acclaimed novelist Lilian Lee and directed by Hong Kong action specialist Ching Siu-Tung (A Chinese Ghost Story), A Terracotta Warrior is a captivating combination of humor, adventure and romance. Zhang and Gong give winning performances, and their chemistry was no doubt heightened by the fact that they were also a couple offscreen at the time.    Zhang Yi Mou, Gong Li, Yu Yung Kang, Wu Han Min, Luk Suk Ming, Tse Pok Man, Cheung Chan Ying, Chiu Chi Cheung, Chow Ting Chiu, Tony Tanaka

888574087067    He’s A Woman, She’s A Man    1994    CHARMING HONG KONG ROMANTIC FARCE IN THE TRADITION OF VICTOR/VICTORIA Pop music super fan Lam Chi Wing disguises herself as a man so she can meet her idol, Rose, at an audition for male singers being staged by Rose’s producer/boyfriend, Sam. The couple’s relationship is on the rocks, however, and Sam signs the talentless Chi-Wing just to spite Rose. Things get even more complicated when a perplexed Sam develops feelings for the conflicted Chi-Wing, who tries her best to keep Sam and Rose together. One of the wittiest and most heartwarming Hong Kong films of its era, this gentle saga of love and sexual confusion is superbly performed by three of the industry’s biggest stars and also functions as a knowing send-up of the contemporary music industry. A box office smash, He’s a Woman, She’s a Man spawned a 1996 sequel and won the Best Actress (Anita Yuen) and Best Original Song prizes at the Hong Kong Film Awards.    Leslie Cheung, Anita Yuen, Carina Lau, Eric Tsang, Jordan Chan, Lawrence Cheng

888574114527    Blade, The (MOD)    1995    In a reckless quest to avenge his father’s death, sword-maker On loses his right arm and becomes a disgraced outcast in the martial world. On’s only hope for retribution lies in his ability to create a new style of fighting that will both compensate for his disability and overcome the savage force of the fearsome opponent who slaughtered his father. Director Tsui Hark’s reinvention of the Shaw Brothers classic One-Armed Swordsman (1967) is filled with kinetic, gravity-defying combat of a sort previously unseen. Always an innovator, Tsui reinvigorated the Hong Kong swordplay genre film through this new approach to action and by crafting a nightmarish but fascinating world far removed from the civilized nobility where such stories usually unfolded. Visually arresting and exhilarating in its primal intensity, The Blade is one of the most important and distinctive works in its director’s filmography.    Wen-Zhou Zhao, Xin-Xin Xiong, Lei Song, Austin Wai, Moses Chan, Bik Gwong Chung, Dut Hing Che, Tong-Wing Chu, Valerie Chow

888574388881    Young Maverick: The Complete Series (MOD)    1979-80    Meet Ben Maverick (Charles Frank), the crown prince of cardsharps. Son of Beau (played by Roger Moore on the original series), Ben may be Harvard educated, but he’s still cut from the same cloth as his cousins (once removed). So it’s a good thing Bret (James Garner) and Bart (Jack Kelly) are on hand to introduce Ben to the ways of the Wild West in The New Maverick TV movie (included in this collection), which successfully paved the way for this Maverick sequel series. Unlike his lighter traveling relations, Ben carries some extra baggage on his wanderings – his lovely grifting gal pal Nell (Susan Blanchard). While the pair may always bluff their way to high stakes, their real ace-in-the-hole is Marshal Edge Troy (John Dehner), who shows up just in time to get the pair out of a jam. Usually. Notable guests include James Woods, Donna Mills, George Dzundza, Howard Duff, Harry Dean Stanton and Morgan Fairchild.    Charles Frank
